Finals Week

Noon on April 22nd is a good time for me.

Assessment Activity

Sorry I did not post this earlier. It would not let me copy and paste it in, but I finally got it to work. Sorry that its late, I hope it doesn't affect my grade.

1. Genres are certain categories that fall under certain subjects. Music, sports, and cultures are amoung the few subjects that have different genres. Genres can be identified by how something is percieved differently by someone. They are produced through ones creation of some new aspect to the original subject, that essentually changes how it is observed/experienced/etc. . . .

2. In the subculture project inwhich I did my project on the Deer Hunters subculture, I wrote about the information using past knowledge on the subject. I basically broke it down, describing what a Deer Hunter is, and what they do. I then, in each paragraph, went into detail about all of the aspects in which makes this subculture a subculture. I did almost no research on this project, because knowledge of the subject was already abundant.

3. When I was creating content for subculture project, I basically just looked at what needed to be done on the project. The objective was the fully describe a subculture (Deer Hunters), and I did so by applying my extensive knowledge on the subject.

4. Project #1 and #3 you can compare and contrast in many different ways. In #1, extensive research, and concrete opinion are neccassary in this project. In #3, research can be used, but in my case, I used none. An opinion on whatever you are analyzing is needed, but the way inwich you discuss your opinion is very different. You are simply looking at the subject, breaking it down, discussing it, and applying your opinion on the given information.

5. If I were to write a paper on an argument for a change in some policy or practice within a community, I would write the paper alot like how I wrote project #1. I would use the internet to gather all of my information that I would use to help persuade the audience. The information, and the way I would write it would be in such a fashion to ge as many people on my side as possible. To distribute this to the community, my first choice would be to use the internet (Blog/Website). I would then try to get my paper in a local newspaper or magazine. I would write my paper knowing that my audience would most likely by teens and adults, so I would then use appropriate language, and good flow to keep them interested.

6. The cultural/community values/rituals/beliefs of a particular group
a. I would go directly to the internet to find my information. I would most likely use Google, or the trusty WMU library site to find any info.
b. I would simply just use the internet. Anything can be found using the world wide web.
c. The only people I would use to gather information are maybe local residents who are experiencing the subject matter, and how they feel about the subject.
d. The information I think would be desirable would be the information that supports my point, and my point only.
e. The criteria I would use to decide whether the info is good or not depends on the relativity, importance, and whether it clearly supports my position or not.
f. The kind of text I would create would be alot like the text in project #1. I would break it down in the same fashion, stating my opinion on the subject, break it down into main categories, and then describe what is going on with the use of good information.

7. One example of a website that may not be credable for this assignment would be Wikipedia.com. On this site, like you may already know, anybody can change the content under certain circumstances. Although many of the content is good, alot of it can be false, or blown out of proportion. Many times, different sources can be found through this website that are actually helpful, and factual.

8. In project #1, where we used citations, citations are necessary for many reasons. First of all, if you didn't use them it could be plagerism. Second of all, it helps the reader know that the information is credable, and came from a legitimate source. In project #2, citation was not needed because I was basically the primary source.

9. Citatino withing an essay help support your argument in many ways. You can throw in quotes from major figures in our society to help support your topic. Also it alows you to take information and data and use that in your essay. There is nothing like using data to help show the actuall raw information on the subject.

10. This semester, the most important thing I conquered was how to structure an essay. Before, I would just throw down my thoughts onto a piece of paper in no specific order. Now I know how to create a good thesis statement, create the main ideas, discuss them throughout the body of the paper, and conclude the paper in a way that really ties the paper together. I also learned how to not make my papers so boring, and to fluff them up a bit to keep the audience interested. That one activity where we read those 2 articles "How to write a boring paper," and "How to write a good academic essay," really helped me out on this.

Strongbad Analysis

When I look at this picture, all I can see in Strongbads is anger, and negativity. The boxing gloves, along with the wrestling mask, shows us that he is always ready for a brawl. Making fists with his gloves, along with the angry look on his face, are enough to make any tough guy back down. His beady eyes are enough make any man say "Whoa, I do not wanna mess with this dude." His smirk, and stature show confidence, as if he is looking to start a confrontation. The absense of color in the picture really captures his disgruntled soul. If the picture were to be in color, one may completely think of him as a more happy-go-lucky type of guy, which he most definately is not. Being an old fan of Strongbad, and the world in which he exists, this picture basically sums it up for who he actually is.

Analysis Article

I decided I am going to do my paper on the sport of Lacrosse. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the nation, and many say that is is the original passtime of America. Here is the link for my article. http://www.collegelax.us/news/2008/03/14/wmu-lacrosse-earning-more-than-wins/. This article made the cut, basically because it gives you a simple rundown of what lacrosse is, its history, and how it is one the fastest growing sports in the nation.

The War Zone

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as terrifying as you worst nightmare and as gruesome as the bloodiest war movie. It is the pinacle of man's struggle between life and death, between peace and conflict, and it lies between the culture's of society, and the conflict of her people. This is the dimension of mankind. . . . It is an area which we call. . . . . . . . . . THE WAR ZONE.

Discussing the Readings

Both papers basically tell us what not to do when writing a paper. I like both of them from a student's standpoint because I learned something from both of them. In the "What is an Academic Paper," i got really bored and lost my train of thought many times based on the sheer length of it. Although I thought it was well structured, it bored the hell out of me just because it was so freaking long. The second paper, "How to write a boring scientific lecture," I thought was alot more interesting. To me, it seemed shorter, and more interesting. In this case, I think that less is more because the reader stays focussed throughout the entire paper, even though it took you nowhere. None the less, both papers taught me how to write a boring paper, something that I hope i won't be doing in the future.

Analysis Project Proposal

As of right now, I am quite unsure on what I would like to do my project on, but I have a few ideas. I have been considering analyzing one of my long-time favorite TV shows, South Park. South Park, in my opinion, is currently the best adult cartoon since the Simpsons. The show covers many serious worldy issues, and alot of times brings light to many serious issues. Another topic I am considering analyzing is the musical genre of Heavy Metal. Heavy metal is one of my favorite kinds of music, and I would like to break down the genre to its roots, and describe how it has changed over the years.

Analysis

When you analyze something, you are basically just breaking it down, and summerizing the basics on whatever subject you are looking at. When reporters on ESPN analyze the football games, they give you the basic facts that you need to know. They tell you the score, who had good or bad games, and other basic information to sum up the game. Everyday you see an analysis on something. The main purpose of an analysis is to organize, and break down information so the reader can get the most out of it.

The Stucture of This Class

Personally, I like how this class is set up. I like how we meet only once a week, and then do all of our work on the blog. For me, writing in a blog does not change the content of my work at all. The one thing that I don't really like, even though I kind of stopped doing it, is posting on other peoples blogs. It can be helpful, but sometimes it can be unneccessary, and maybe lead people in the wrong direction. Plus, sometimes you get captain smartass, who leaves you a smartass remark because he can get away with it on the internet. If we do critiquing, I would rather do it in the class period.

Ethnographic Article

Utilizing "Topic Sentence Worksheet"

I plan on doing my report on Hunters, so here's my basic outline how its going to go. . .

THESIS:
Statement - I have come across many different "cultural niches" in my life, and I must say that one of the most unique subcultures in our society, are Deer hunters.
Supporting Details - When talking about deer hunters, I am speaking of the type who obssess about the sport. They are a hard group to distinguish, but spending a day with a group of hunters, during hunting season, will enlighten you on all of their cultural aspects. The slang, the clothing, and all of the off-season antics, are emong the few aspects that definatively shape the subculture of Deer hunters.

FIRST TOPIC:
Topic Sentence - Typicall the Deer hunter's hunting season lasts about 12 week during fall, but a true Deer hunter will tell you that as soon as the off-season begins, a new season starts.
Supporting Details - Talk about all of the antics that a hunter does during the regular, and off-seasons.

SECOND TOPIC
Topic Sentence - The way a Deer hunter acts in puplic, typically varies from the way they will act during the season.
Supporting Details - Talk about how they act in season. All of the curse words, slang terms, clothing, and hunting stories a hunter partakes in. Talk about how they act in public. The hunting conventions, sources of entertainment, and clothing.

THIRD TOPIC
Topic Sentence - Like all sports, each athlete has their own style, or particullar way in which they compete.
Supporting Details - Talk about different hunters prepartation, and strategies while hunting. Also speak about the "tactical" plans they devise to get the on, and off season.

CONCLUSION
Topic Sentence - Deer hunters, in a sense, are like jocks, they are an athlete of their own sport, the sport between man and wild.

Definition: When is Someone "Educated?"

Throughout one's entire life, they are constanly going through the education process. One may say, "Hey, thats not true! I have been through every level of education, elementary through high school, and even college. I am done with me education." Well, sure, after you have gotten through school, one of the most influential ways one is educated, you are done with school, but not done being educated. The definition of education is "the act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills." In my eyes, the education process begins once a child is born, until that person dies. Every day of our lives we learn atleast one new thing. This thing could be about oneself, the world, an abstract concept or way of thinking, it could be anything!

Peer Review Impression

I like what we did on the first peer review, but I think it should be changed a bit. If we were to pair up with a partner, and not only do the worksheet that we did, but discuss it as well, we would be alot better off. I got alot of useful information about my paper by doing this, but verbal discussion could greatly increase the amount of value it had on my paper.

Assignment #2, Subcultures

For assignment #2, the two subcultures I am interested in are Hunters, and Gamers.

When I talk about hunters, I am talking about people who obsess themselves about the sport. These people typically have entire arsinals of weapons, and use a vocablulary that only one of there own can understand. Their style of clothing does not stray too far away from the norm, but usually you can point them out by the bright orange hats they constantly wear. Camo and plaid are among the favorite clothing patterns of these people. Quite frankly, I could go on and on about this subculture.

Gamers are the people whos live revolves around their video games. These people use alot of terms only gamers would know, and their language is much like the way in which they type to people over the internet. Clothing-wise, they wear normal clothes, but what they wear, has probably been worn for the last week or so.

Argument Essays

I chose the essay, Whodunit - The Media, and I feel that is was a well written essay, except there were a few areas that the writer could have done a better job on. It wasn't clear which side of the argugument the writer was on until the second paragraph. As well as a bad thesis statement, here leading sentences were not great either. Besides that, I thought there was good transitions between paragraphs, good information, and very well worded. I personally thought it was a very interesting essay, and the author is fairly knowledgeable on the subject.

Project Proposal

I will be doing my essay on the contrevoursy surrounding the halluncinogenic drug, Salvia Divinorum. As of late, the legal substance has been undergoing scrutiny about its effects on the human body, and whether it should remain legal or not. Using the research that I collect, I will first give a brief history on the drug, explaining where it comes from, what it is, how it is used, and the effects it has on the human body. After that I will explain peoples past experiences with the drug, both positively and negatively. Using my research, I will explain the current legal status of salvia, and how current events are changing it. Finally I will give my theory on the subject, relating salvia to marijuana's legal status, and how if one is legal, the other should be, and vice-versa.

Research Exercise #2

Eric Guidobono
ENGL 1050
Research Excercise #2
Topic choices: Salvia, is it safe???

Work Cited 1:
NBC10. "Cheap, Legal, and Dangerous." 2006-04-11. Delaware.

Summary:
In the town of Wilmington, Delaware, Brett Chidester, a straight "A" high school student with alot of friends killed himself. Brett used the legal, hallucinogenic drug multiple times a day without question. Although salvia is not a deadly drug, Brett's suicide was brought on by depression, which can be brought on by excessive use of the drug. Now his mother, Kathy Chidester is trying to outlaw the drug in the state of Delaware.

Response:
I feel that it is obsurred that his mother is trying to outlaw the drug. Obviously Brett was a troubled kid if he needed to trip out everyday on the drug. Is the drug dangerous, yes and no. Everything is bad if you consume too much of it, hell, even the over-consumption of water can be fatal. Should we outlaw water? According to NBC10's, "Cheap, Legal, and Dangerous," People in the mountains of southern Mexico have been using Salvia for more than 1,000 years. Now it has become popular with high school and college kids [paragraph 7]. How come people from southern Mexico can use it for thousands of years without a problem, and Brett Chidester is resposible for making the drug just around the corner from being outlawed? People don't do stupid things, stupid people do stupid things.

Work Cited 2:
Turner, D.M. "Salvinorin - The Psychedelic Essence of Salvia Divinorum." Panther Press, August 1996

Summary:
Salvia Divinorum is the most potent naturally occurring psychedelic known. For thousands of years, it has been ritualistically used by Mazatec Indians of the Sierra Mazateca region of Oaxaca, Mexico, and possibly by earlier human civilizations. The effects experienced while under the influence of salvia are extremely bizarre and varrie greatly. Salvia does not induce the same physical health problems as does cigarrettes, or even marijuana. Although physical health issues are not a concern, over consumption of the plant can cause depression, and insanity.

Response:
Just by reading Turner's knowledge of the plant facinates me. In his book, "Salvinorin - The Psychedelic Essence of Salvia Divinorum," Early experiments by pioneering psychonauts suggest that access to benignly expansive realms, as well as new and very real dangers [Introduction, paragraph 2]. He is basically saying that users can be enlightened many different ways. You could realize things going on in your life that you would have never realized or considered dealing with in the past.

Sample Essay Sentences

Thesis Statement- At all level of academics, some students will go to extreme measures to get the extra edge by cheating, a problem that is induced by lack of motivation, resposiblity, and academic integrity.

Topic Sentence 1- Dishonesty in academics is a issue that is increasing every year in the United States, not only dooming a students test score, but their future as well.

Topic Sentence 2- Cheating in the classroom is brought on by many factors but among the largest is laziness, a problem brought on by the world around us.

Topic Sentence 3- Students can be swayed away from cheating by a school's policy on cheating, and how cheaters will be dealt will.

Topic Sentence 4- Every school has their own policy on cheating, ranging from the extremes of nothing, to academic dismissal.

Conclusion- There is nothing that can cause a student to cheat other than themselves. With the extreme amount of academic competition we see today, even students with some integrity may choose to partake in the subject-matter. Every school should make examples out of cheaters, and ram their policy down the student's throat on day 1.

Research Exercise #1

Topic- Explicit Content in the Media
Title- Media effects and Society, by Elizabeth M. Perse
Publisher- Mahwah, NJ : L. Erlbaum Associates, 2001.

Summary- In the book, the author speaks about the general affect the media has on its viewers. How it shapes public opinions, and teaches us alot of what we know. She also talks about how violence and sexual contents in our media effects peoples outlook on certain subjects, and the social impacts of it.

Response- Although I feel that censorship is wrong because it infringes on the creators rights to express themselves, the content should be regulated. There is no way a child is going to be stopped from watching shows like "Jerry Springer," or "Jackass," unless their parent is supervising them. Thats why I feel that with the up-and-coming development of digital cable, and satellite television, inwhich explicit content can be blocked, or simple unavailable, is the way T.V should be watched.

Additional Ideas- I should probably look for some sort of legislation, or laws on the subject, and any current event that is focussed on the subject.

Peer Review

1. I think peer review should always be anonymous.

2. Some focus should be put on grammar and puncutation, if it is an ubundant problem. Otherwise the main focus should be on the substance of the paper.

3. People should be allowed to write about topics of their choice.

3 Debatable Research Topics

1. Legalizing Marijuana
-What are the benefits of legallizing marijuana?
-Is marijuana any more dangerous than ciggarettes, alchohaul, and other legal drugs?
-Can legalizing marijuana put a stop to, or slow down abbuse of the drug and street crime?

2. Steroids in Baseball
-Is performance enhancing drugs in baseball affecting how the game is played?
-Can the MLB put a stop to steroids, and how/when will they do it?
-If a drug testing policy is intalled in the league, what will happen to players, fans, game-play, etc. . .

3. Explict content in music and television.
-Is it tainting the vision of our youth?
-Are the age regulations on movies really affecting who views the movie?
-Would not allowing explict contect in music, tv, and movies impede on the creators freedom to express themselves?

Fake News

"Fake News," is a news genre that takes everyday news we see in the media, and puts a commical twist on the subject. Sadly, the name does not fit what this genre is made up of. None of the news is fake, the news is just simply made fun of. By doing this, you are giving the youth a chance to watch a news show without actually watching a "news show." It can keep kids ingaged, entertained, and informed at the same time. If you sat two kids down, in two seperate rooms, one watching the Daily Show, and the other watching CNN, both shows having the same subject matter. I just might say that the kid watching the Daily Show may take more out of it than the kid watching regular news on CNN. Although I don't feel that people watch fake news simply out of getting the news as opposed to watching it as a commical T.V show, it can still give the youth, or even adults the news that they wouldn't get anywhere else.

Thesis Statements.

1. Many accidents on our highways are cause by road rage, a problem that needs to delt with.

2. Violence can be an entertaining aspect in many of the movies we watch today, but with the increace in violence in Disney movies, young children are being exposed to something they should not be.

3. One of the most intriguing, and facinating animals on our planet is the ant, and their many different species.

4. Human kindness can be seen in the eyes of rescued animals by how they act when a human is helping them out.

5. Droughts can be devastating to both man and beast, and there are many reason why one may occur.

6. Stephen King, one of the greatest writers of our time, is the author of the book "The Shining."

7. One of the most devastating tragaties of our recent history is when the Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean.

8. Drug addiction in America is a growing problem that destroys families, and ruins many lives.

9. "Saving Private Ryan," is an exceptional movie that captures the violence, gore, and hardships of war.

10. Having a pet is like having your very own friend, but in my experience, the worst possible pet to have is a rabbit.

11. The most important job in our country is being the President, a job in which charisma, compassion, and control are just three of the many aspects the President should have.

12. In the drop-dead gorgious realm of beauty pageants, only the perfect survive.

13. The amount of destraction we see in the classroom today are greatly increacing, and with the installation of school uniforms, those distractions will reduce.

14. William Shakespeare, one of the most famous playwrites in history, wrote Macbeth, Hamlet, and The Temptest.

15. Using the power of scent, Aromatherapy can help to soothe the mind, body, spirit, and even alter one's mood.

Audience, Purpose, Design: How It Influences Me

When I right, usually the audience does not play a large role in how I write. The only time the audience influences me is the age of whom I am writing it far. I have never written out of the sheer joy of it, so pretty much of all of my writings are for a class. But other than that, I still enjoy writing. The thing that probably influences me the most is the topic of the paper. Usually if I am writing for a purpose, or a subject that intrests me, I write with alot more depth. If it is a topic that I have no interest in, the paper usually is in less depth. When I right, I like to write mostly about controversial topics because it gives me a chance to speak my mind.

Personally I don't really think I have a certain "style" when I write. All I can say is this, when I do write, I write in proper paragraph form with good grammar and all of that good stuff.
