Research Exercise #1

Topic- Explicit Content in the Media
Title- Media effects and Society, by Elizabeth M. Perse
Publisher- Mahwah, NJ : L. Erlbaum Associates, 2001.

Summary- In the book, the author speaks about the general affect the media has on its viewers. How it shapes public opinions, and teaches us alot of what we know. She also talks about how violence and sexual contents in our media effects peoples outlook on certain subjects, and the social impacts of it.

Response- Although I feel that censorship is wrong because it infringes on the creators rights to express themselves, the content should be regulated. There is no way a child is going to be stopped from watching shows like "Jerry Springer," or "Jackass," unless their parent is supervising them. Thats why I feel that with the up-and-coming development of digital cable, and satellite television, inwhich explicit content can be blocked, or simple unavailable, is the way T.V should be watched.

Additional Ideas- I should probably look for some sort of legislation, or laws on the subject, and any current event that is focussed on the subject.

Fake News

"Fake News," is a news genre that takes everyday news we see in the media, and puts a commical twist on the subject. Sadly, the name does not fit what this genre is made up of. None of the news is fake, the news is just simply made fun of. By doing this, you are giving the youth a chance to watch a news show without actually watching a "news show." It can keep kids ingaged, entertained, and informed at the same time. If you sat two kids down, in two seperate rooms, one watching the Daily Show, and the other watching CNN, both shows having the same subject matter. I just might say that the kid watching the Daily Show may take more out of it than the kid watching regular news on CNN. Although I don't feel that people watch fake news simply out of getting the news as opposed to watching it as a commical T.V show, it can still give the youth, or even adults the news that they wouldn't get anywhere else.

Audience, Purpose, Design: How It Influences Me

When I right, usually the audience does not play a large role in how I write. The only time the audience influences me is the age of whom I am writing it far. I have never written out of the sheer joy of it, so pretty much of all of my writings are for a class. But other than that, I still enjoy writing. The thing that probably influences me the most is the topic of the paper. Usually if I am writing for a purpose, or a subject that intrests me, I write with alot more depth. If it is a topic that I have no interest in, the paper usually is in less depth. When I right, I like to write mostly about controversial topics because it gives me a chance to speak my mind.

Personally I don't really think I have a certain "style" when I write. All I can say is this, when I do write, I write in proper paragraph form with good grammar and all of that good stuff.
